Self Insured Lumber Businesses Association, Inc. (SILBA) was organized on January 1, 1993 as a workers compensation self insurance group under Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 152. SILBA was created to make a self insured workers compensation program available for Massachusetts lumber businesses, providing an alternative to the traditional workers compensation markets. Its purpose is to meet and fulfill employers' obligations and liabilities under applicable Massachusetts Workers Compensation Statutes through the effective use of cost efficient claims service, loss control, and safety programs. SILBA is governed by its Board of Trustees, all of whom are elected by and represent the members. Claim and safety services, as well as day to day operations, are administered by the group's program manager, FutureComp. SILBA works to identify new prospective members through the independent agency community in Massachusetts and through its sponsoring association relationship with the National Retail Lumber Association and its local affiliate the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Dealers Association. From 1993-2024, SILBA members have generated more than $122 million in premium, on which approximately $28.1Million in dividends has been earned by members. Of this dividend pool, more than $26.5 million has been distributed back to members. In 2024, with 47 members generating $3.4 million of premium, SILBA’s focus remains on providing members with superior services to assist them in keeping their employees and working environment safe, and a team approach to handling claims to help ensure the best possible outcome when an accident or injury does occur.
